The 140-year-old Government College (renamed Mangalore University College) will soon receive the heritage tag. When the Centre issues the order, the red-laterite building, one of its kind in the region, will be the first structure in the district to receive the honour of being a heritage building.
Thanks to the initiative taken by Union minister for law and justice M Veerappa Moily, who is also the alumni of the college, the proposal is in the final stages in the Prime Minister's Office.
The college will receive Rs 5 crore grants for the restoration purpose. The proposal includes restoration of Ravindra Bhavan, the academy hall that was constructed in 1924 and named after Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore to commemorate his visit to the college in 1922.
The college is one among the oldest educational institutes in the region and was the result of a movement to set up Swadeshi educational institutes during the freedom movement. But the institute started off as a regional school in 1866 and was later promoted as a college with the introduction of the F A course. Later, in 1870 the present building was constructed and the institute was handed over to the government. It was handed over to Mangalore University in 1993.
College authorities say the building is in dire need of renovation as it is crumbling in many places. Being an old structure, it requires special maintenance and hence needs more funds. The heritage status will help restore and maintain the structure and attract tourists, the college authorities feel.
